I arrived in the early morning as a temporary Nanny for a family of 3 boys age 5, 7 and 9. The family is currently looking for a permanent nanny but they want to take their time finding the right fit so they are using our temp service while interviewing.
Getting to know each other
I found Mum, Dad and the boys all looked shattered, and found out they just arrived back from Disneyworld the night before! After the usual meet and great, the parents were out the door and off to work. I had to quickly engage with the boys as the school run was half hour away and they needed to be organised. The walk to school was a great time to have a talk with them. They told me all about themselves, what their likes and dislikes were. They were very sweet and helpful as they even told me where I could find everything in the house and told me more about the family routines. Children are always keen to tell you something you don't know!
Enjoying the outdoor
Before leaving the house, the 5 year old showed me a drawing of different flowers he had done and named them. He was keen for me to help with any more which gave me the idea to take him and his brothers to Western Springs park after school and have a look around at the wildlife there. It would also be a chance to have an ice cream and get to know them better.
They were all happy to be out at the park and particularly liked the eels and the big orange fish in the lake.
Wrapping things up
When arriving back home, the 5 year old made another drawing, this time of all things we had seen at the park , and then wrote on it “ To my Mummy” :-) The parents came back home and were thankful and relieved that dinner had been prepared for them all and that the holiday pile of washing had been done ! I had such a great time with these 3 boys, I would be very happy to be their nanny again.
Tip of the day
Find out more about children’s interest and go with it. It is a great way to interact with them.
